A Slight Risk of Severe Storms Exists for the Eastern Portions of the Area Today

A very dynamic pattern will exist over the area later this afternoon and into this evening as a deepening are of low pressure looks to lift into eastern Iowa. Wind fields today remain favorable for severe thunderstorms capable of producing all hazards, including an isolated tornado or two, however the degree of instability that will be required for severe storms remains in question.

At this time it appears areas to the east and south are at the higher risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon where the better dynamics exist and therefore a slight risk is in place across the eastern half of Lee county.

A lot of cloud cover is presently found over the local area which will limit instability overall. However, there is a chance that some modest instability could grow over the region later this afternoon allowing for a few stronger storms.

Timing on the storms would be after 4pm until around 10pm this evening.

The next update from the Storm Prediction Center will be issued at 11:30am. We’ll continue to monitor throughout the day.
